The Chief looked back, giving her a long, measuring look.

"Is that true, Garland?" Eleanor asked. "That looks like -- like moult."

The Chief wiped his hand across his face, then fished out his cigarettes. "You're both right," he said. He took a moment to light his cigarette, then looked over the assembled group, as though measuring each of them up. "Vaughn Carpenter . . . was a chameleon."
